Lufthansa introduce Premium Economy and upgrade auctions for passengers in economy class

Saturday 22nd November was the formal launch of Lufthansa's new cabin class, premium economy. The same day Lufthansa introduced upgrade auctions, the opportunity for economy class passengers to bid for an upgrade to premium economy.

The upgrade auctions are called 'myOffer' and come into effect up to 72 hours before departure on flights with available seats. You can check if ‘myOffer’ is applicable by logging onto your reservation through ‘My Bookings’ on Lufthansa's website. Here you are able to see if you qualify for "myOffer". If you are, then a link will present to the page where you can place a bid. You can bid up to 72 hours before departure, and during that period you can also change your bid as many times as you desire, thereafter the bid is binding. Between 72 hours and 36 hours before departure the auction itself takes place, and between 48 and 24 hours before departure you will be notified whether your bid has been accepted or not. If your offer is accepted, payment is charged automatically to your credit card and you receive a new e-ticket for your trip. The criteria that are accessed during the auction are; your own bid, how many seats are available in premium economy, and the value of all the bids received. A winning bid also provides other benefits, such as two pieces of checked luggage and the opportunity to purchase access to Lufthansa’s lounges (if you do not have a gold card or similar). myOffer is available for all of Lufthansa’s destinations which are served with premium economy, but not for bookings made in India and Japan (for legal reasons) or group bookings. The destinations that will initially be offered with premium economy are the destinations served by the Boeing 747-8; Bangalore, Beijing, Buenos Aires, Chicago, Hong Kong, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Sao Paolo, Seoul, Tokyo Haneda and Washington DC. The entire long-haul fleet is expected to have premium economy installed by the summer of 2015. BusinessClass.co.uk was on the very first flight of Lufthansa's premium economy in October between Frankfurt and Washington. You can read our review of the seat, cabin and service via this link.
