In early May, one of London's most anticipated hotels opened. It is located in the 306 metre high building, The Shard, designed by Renzo Piano, which is currently Western Europe's tallest building. The hotel is Shangri-la’s first establishment in the UK and occupies floors 34-52.
The hotel has 202 rooms and suites, all with a view of London. According to Shangri-La, the rooms are also amongst the largest in London, 42 square metres on average. The design is influenced by traditional Chinese art with a modern twist. All rooms are equipped with a "Shangri-La Bed", which has a special design that follows the contours of the body. The bathrooms have heated floors and are clad in marble with toilet products from Acqua di Parma. Guests staying in suites also have access to a butler service. The Chinese theme is also present in the hotel's three restaurants which have the names Ting, Láng and Gong. Ting is the hotel's main restaurant, with a mix of local cuisine and authentic Asian specialties. Láng is a pastry shop and bakery with Shangri-La's signature pastries and Gong is the hotel's bar, London's highest champagne and cocktail bar, located on the top floor, floor 52. Also on the top floor, there is a 24-hour gym as well as London's highest swimming pool. On the 34th floor is the hotel's event floor. There are three event rooms with space for 10 to 140 guests, all with views of the Thames. You can also book the whole floor, which then has room for 200 guests. The hotel was formally opened with a traditional Asian lion ceremony followed by a ribbon-cutting at the hands of the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson.
