This morning there was a big press conference held at Helsinki Airport, where Finnair CEO, Pekka Vauramo, showed off for the first time, their new long-haul seats which, from 2015, will be installed on Finnair's long-haul fleet. The new seats will primarily be installed on their new aircraft, the Airbus A350.

In total, Finnair has ordered eleven Airbus A350 XWBs (with an option for eight more), the first of which will be delivered in 2015. Finnair is the first airline in Europe to use this new aircraft, an aircraft that SAS have also ordered. The Airbus A350 XWB is generally considered as an equivalent to the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and uses 30 percent less fuel than, for example, an Airbus A340. The aircraft is partially made of composite materials. For Finnair, the new aircraft is an important step in the renewal of their long-haul fleet, and not least, part of their strategy to continue stable growth in the Asian market.

The new cabin products

The new products have been developed by the design firm Vertti Kivi & Co, the same firm who designed the lounges at Helsinki Airport. The idea is to take Finnish design to the air, as well as on the ground.

The new Finnair cabin design on Airbus A350 The Airbus A350 XWB (which stands for Extra Wide Body) has 297 seats on board. The aircraft is generally very quiet and has larger windows than previous models (which it calls ‘panoramic windows’). Two other new features are the LED lighting on board, and wireless internet. The new lighting has been named, the ‘Space Alive Concept’, and features dynamic lighting with different colours and shades depending on time of day, season and even destination. This includes traditional Finnair colours, like fresh blues and orange. The aircraft also has an advanced air filtration system, which means that the air is filtered and cleaned every 2-3 minutes.

Business Class

The new seat in business class is developed by French Zodiac and is of the Zodiac Cirrus III model. There is a 1-2-1 configuration, which means that all passengers have direct access to the aisle. The seats convert to fully flat beds when reclined

Economy Class

The new seats in economy class are the Zodiac Z3000 slim-line, with 31-32 inch legroom and a 3-3-3 configuration. Nine chairs in a row is quite alot, but due to the aircraft’s width, it should not lead to any changes in the width of the chair or passenger comfort compared to previous products.

Finnair new economy class Airbus A350 In total, there are 208 seats in Economy Class. At the front of economy class is, what Finnair calls, Economy Comfort, with an improved headrest, high-quality headphones and four inches of extra legroom (i.e 35 inches). In total there are 43 seats in Economy Comfort.
