More and more passengers are choosing to travel with only hand luggage, and this means a growing dilemma for airlines. Not only is there not enough storage, it also means that boarding and disembarking takes considerably longer as passengers often need to look through the cabin to find free space and may then have to travel several rows in the wrong direction to get their bag when departing the aircraft. To cope with the increased demand, Boeing has developed a completely new type of hand luggage storage in the cabins of its Boeing 737. The new concept has been named ‘Space Bins’ and provides room for six approved carry-ons in each overhead compartment, two more than the current Sky Interior offers on many of the newer Boeing 737s. In particular, on the larger Boeing 737 aircraft, it means a significant increase in the amount of hand luggage that will fit on board, 194 carry-ons compared to 132 previously on a new Boeing-900ER and Boeing 737 MAX9. On the Boeing 737-800 or Boeing 737 MAX8, it means 174 compared to the previous 118, and the Boeing 737-700 or Boeing 737 MAX7, it means 130 compared to a previous 90.

It is also possible to order the Space Bins in connection with the upgrading of existing Boeing 737 Next Generation. Boeing has also produced a short video that explains how it all works: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=jfacBnut_U4
