London and gin have gone hand in hand since the ‘gin craze’ of the 18th century - when consumption of gin increased rapidly in Great Britain, especially in London, and the city had a virtual epidemic of extreme drunkenness - so in a continuation of the love affair, a new bar has opened in Holborn claiming to have the capital’s largest selection of gin.

Earlier this week, Rosewood London opened The Gin Bar as part of its Holburn Dining Room. It has 400 different gins on its menu, as well as 27 types on tonic, meaning 14,035 possible pairings - enough to please even the most avid gin-lover. Prices start from £9 for Rathbone London Dry Gin, to £52 for a rare 1950s Taplows Dry Gin. The bar offers 100 gins distilled in the UK, including Northumberland Gin Complany’s Steam Punk Gin and Opihr Oriental Spiced Gin, along with a range of classic gin cocktails, including the Aviation, Martinez, and Vespa.

Holborn Dining Room’s bar manager, Matthew Sloper, said: “We always want to have a strong British feeling in everything we do at Holborn Dining Room so why not work with the most celebrated UK spirit? “At 400 gins and counting, we have the largest selection of gin in London which is really exciting, especially when coupled with the 27 different tonics, including our top-secret homemade tonic.” British brasserie Holborn Dining Room opened in 2014 and is based in the Rosewood London hotel. It serves seasonal, locally sourced British cuisine “with a modern twist”.
