Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon visited Aberdeen International Airport this week to unveil a £20m investment plan to increase the size of the terminal building and transform passenger facilities.

In what will be the single largest investment in the airport since the current terminal opened its doors in 1977, the project will see the terminal’s size increase by 50%, as well as new immigration, domestic, and international arrivals facilities; a larger and enhanced security area; a new retail and catering layout in the departure lounge; new baggage reclaim facilities; and two new business lounges.

This will involve the construction of a two-storey extension to the south of the existing terminal building, making space for new arrivals and immigrations facilities on the ground floor. Phase one is expected to be completed by June 2017. The two new business lounges will be located on the upper level, the airport said in a press release. First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said: “This investment by Aberdeen International Airport and its owners shows great ambition and confidence in the Airport's future in preparing for projected growth. By increasing capacity and improving the passenger experience, the Airport is making a clear statement of intent and the North East and Scotland will see the benefit. “Aberdeen is a fantastic city with lots to offer and the airport is a crucial gateway to the North East. This expansion opens up the city to even more tourists and businesses, which will result in an economic boost for the city and the country as a whole.”
