Five of the Best Champagnes served in Business Class

Few pleasures rival the elegance of sipping fine Champagne at 35,000 feet. For discerning travelers, premium sparkling wine is more than just a welcome gesture—it's a hallmark of luxury and a highlight of the Business Class journey. While the comfort of a full-flat bed is essential, the curated wine and gourmet dining elevate the entire inflight experience, transforming long-haul flights into memorable occasions.

Champagne, produced exclusively in France’s storied Champagne region, is crafted from pinot noir, chardonnay, and pinot meunier grapes. The result is a textured, nuanced wine with a creamy mousse and signature finesse—an ideal aperitif before departure or mid-flight indulgence.

Yet, altitude presents unique challenges for wine appreciation. Aircraft cabins are pressurized and have low humidity, which can mute aromas and alter mouthfeel. The hum of engines and dry air at cruising altitude can diminish our ability to perceive subtle flavors, making Champagne selection on board a true art.

Renowned Master of Wine Peter McCombie notes that richer, more layered Champagnes are best suited for the air. “At altitude, wines are more volatile,” he explains. “Opt for a vintage release, a prestige cuvée, or a top-quality non-vintage from a reputable house, ideally with a generous proportion of reserve wine.”

For vintage and prestige cuvées, McCombie recommends Taittinger Comtes de Champagne, Krug, Piper-Heidsieck Rare, and Charles Heidsieck Blanc des Millénaires. In the non-vintage category, Charles Heidsieck Brut Réserve NV and Piper-Heidsieck Cuvée Brut stand out for their quality and balance.

While vintage Champagnes are typically reserved for First Class, some airlines—such as EVA Air—occasionally delight Business Class guests with rare pours like Krug. These exceptions offer a taste of true exclusivity in the sky.

Most inflight Champagne is Brut, signifying a dry profile. However, ultra-dry styles like Brut Nature or Zero Dosage often appear lean and austere at altitude, making a classic Brut the preferred choice for most palates.

Leading airlines now consult Master Sommeliers and collaborate with Michelin-starred chefs to ensure their inflight wine lists shine, regardless of the challenges of flight. For the finest tasting experience, experts recommend enjoying Champagne early in the journey, when your senses are at their sharpest. Cheers to refined travel!

Virgin Upper Class Champagne

Virgin Atlantic’s Upper Class consistently breaks from convention, and its Champagne offering is no exception. Instead of the usual suspects like Moët, Lanson, or Piper-Heidsieck, Virgin pours Ayala Brut Majeur—a connoisseur’s choice from a boutique Champagne house established in 1860. Ayala’s crisp, contemporary style, with its bright minerality and delicate fruit, is especially well-suited for savoring at altitude. This historic house, which received a royal warrant in 1908, continues to impress with its refined and food-friendly Champagnes, making it a standout in the sky.

Four different MOET A CHANDON

Emirates Business Class Champagne

Emirates continues to set the benchmark for inflight wine programs, and its Business Class Champagne is a testament to that commitment. Across all Business Class routes, guests are treated to Moët & Chandon Grand Vintage, a celebrated Champagne noted for its vibrant stone fruit, citrus zest, and subtle brioche notes. Exclusively poured for Emirates travelers, this vintage Champagne is selected for its complexity and freshness, which shine even at cruising altitude. A glass of Grand Vintage is the perfect prelude to destinations like Mauritius, the Maldives, or Seychelles.

Upon boarding, passengers are welcomed with a complimentary flute of this distinguished Champagne, crafted from the finest wines of a single exceptional year. Emirates’ dedication to fine wine is evident in the meticulous curation of its cellar, which is among the largest in the airline industry.
